For those of you with an A-body looking to upgrade to rear disc brakes, look for a 94-96 impala or late model caprice 9C1 police package. The rear ends of all impala's for those years are factory disc, 10 bolt rears. Some of the 9C1's have the same rear end. They all carry 3.08 gears, but are still lsd's. These rear ends bolt right into the factory mounts for A-body cars. You will need different rims as the impala rear end is designed for 17 inch rims. You may also need to be creative with the emergency brake hook-up. I have not gotten that far yet and the rear end I have was removed from the car with a torch so alot of those things only have the ends attached to the rear end intact. These rear ends are exactly the same dimentions as a chevelle 10 bolt and will bolt directly into any A-body. With today's gas prices, the 3.08's will improve gas mileage. However, if you want some more kick, swap the gears out. NOTE: If you have never set up gears in a rear end before it is suggested that you find a reputable shop to do the work as the gears must be shimmed corectly. Failure to do so may result in pre-mature/catastrophic failure. If the brakes on the impala rear are not performing well enough for you, upgrades for that axle can then be purchased from aftermarket suppliers. All in all I paid $100 for the rear end I have. Add the cost of gears and upgraded brakes and it's still alot cheaper than the conversion kits for A-bodies getting factory type performance. Good luck, and good hunting.
So, I went to this little car show today, the 1st annual Millerstown Riverfest and Car Show. Nothing huge, just a little county car show. Descent turn out though. A vast array of cars did show up for this event even though it was not widely publicized. There were the muscle cars, hot rods, race cars and pickups one would normally expect to see at such a show like this as well as a few oddities. While I do not believe that adding a GT racing spoiler and seat covers to an 89 Ford Probe means you should be entering judged competitions, I do applaud the owner for taking the time to show pride in their vehicle and get involved in an automotive activity. Especially since the owner was a teenager doing what they could to support local car shows. As car show season sets upon us once again, let us be mindful of those just starting out in this great hobby of ours. Chances are they envy the hell out of your cherry ride, even though they're struggling with a beater. Encourage the new guys. It's their spirit and countenance that keeps our fair passtime growing.
So I'm driving home from my friends house on Sunday and when I turn off the highway onto a rural road, I notice a knocking sound in my 97 eclipse. So, I pull off the side of the road and pop the hood to discover it leaking oil through the exhaust gasket, all over the manifold and turbo. The engine sounds fine at idle, so I twist the throttle body open a little. Surprise, surprise! Knocking like a wood pecker. Damn! Guess I'll have to get the GTO ready for the summer faster than I thought. And with gas prices going through the roof, I'm not sure how much of that my wallet can take. Such is life, I guess.
