Default ATF Flush

I need to perform an auto trans fluid flush, anyone got a how-to on how to perform this in the driveway? My piece of **** takes Mercon so I am going to put in some Royal Purple ATF since it has a Mercon application.

It isn't too hard to do luckily. You drain out the AFT that is in there now (there is typically two drain plugs on the Trans, one on the main pan below the valve block and one by the differential), fill it with new trans fluid and maybe some seafoam or AFT flush compound which cleans out the burnt out clutchpowder from the clutch packs, run that typically at idle for around 15 minutes to half an hour, drain that and put in fresh fluid. In all you may need 10 to 15 quarts of ATF for the two refills but it will clean it out pretty good.

So I after i drain the fluid i put in new fluid with ATF flush compound, run car @ idle drain that after 15-30 mins and put in fresh ATF? What about the filter in between the pan and valve block? Also what about the check balls in the valve block, wont those fall out?

I missed nearly all of the Auto Trans classes when i was in school so I never learned how to do this.

While you are at it it wouldn't be a bad idea to change the filter as well, though if you decide to do that you will need a pan gasket and the filter, though you could do that after the first drain. The check balls are encased in the valve block so as long as you don't take the valve block out you will be fine. Running the car at idle for a while just flushes the fresh fluid and seafoam through the system and cleans the gunk out of the valve block and anything still suspended in the clutch packs, and then that all gets flushed out with the second drain.

to flush the trans correct you need to take it to a trans shop that has the machine to flush it. It will be almost impossible to do this at home. Keep in mind that more than 1/2 of the fluid is in the converter and not the pan.

1. Take it to a trans shop and have them use the flush machine, this hooks up to the cooler lines and basically all the fluid is pumped out of the trans and replaced with new. They will do this while it is running to pump it all out.

2. After it has been flushed, remove the pan and change the filter and gasket.
