Sounds like a water pump with no water... but I'm sure you would know by now if you forgot to refill the radiator.

I have to agree with Johnnyboy!

A few questions!
Is the waterpump belt driven? If so how much flex is in the belt?
Does the pump have a bleed screw to release the air? This would cause the no coolant in the pump.
have you removed the belt and rotated the pump by hand to see if the impeller is rubbing the housing?

You tore it apart and put a pump in it and did not replace the timing belt while you was there?

I think everybody took for granted you had replaced it with a new belt and dismissed that as a cause.

Glad you figured it out!
