For every 2 new members, I feel like one is just an empty profile. I think there should be a simple walk through when someone signs up... for example:

welcome to gears garage. get started by creating a profile and contributing in the forums.

Then you could put a link in "creating a profile" and take them to that design page. Just a thought

Yeah, Gear and I have been talking about setting up a tutorial/help page that would be linked from the welcome message sent to new members.

I think many are just a bit shy. I try to message or comment any new guys I see on to make them feel more comfortable... and it seems to work pretty well, but many log off before I can catch them.
