Then you'd love a V8. You can feel the "vibrations" 20 feet away unmodified....
at idle.

They don't even have to be fully modded. My roommate has a 2006 WRX with an HKS Hi-Power exhaust and K&N Typhoon intake system and he shakes the house every time he comes in. It sounds even better at full throttle. Though the Subaru WRC sounds kind of weird with the straight pipes and shutter box, not to mention the WRC2008 (and all of Subaru's latest WRX models) look rather... out of place, I guess, on a rally course. Too much like a softened hot hatch and not enough of the rally spirit.
Webstad, have you ever considered maybe a Lancia? They have quite a bit of Rally pedigree.

the new WRX looks ugly, it shouldn't have been a hatchback, i would have accepted a 2 door coupe instead if they wanted to change the 4 door sedan look

I have, and I really like the Delta HF Integrale Evolution. The problem is that those things are hard to find nowadays, and if anything happened to the car, how the hell am I going to find another one?. Those things have collector status now, and if you find one worth buying it's MINT, and you really don't want to be messing around with them at that point.
Personally I think Subaru has gone off the deep end with the Impreza. What ever happened to the monster the destroyed everything in the WRC (exception: Lancer. those things make life very difficult for the Impreza)? I think '99 was the last year they made a proper rally car, and really a decent looking car to boot. Remember the 22B? Those things would DESTROY any of the best Imprezas that have been made since (and pretty much everything else).

Part of me wants to point the finger at Toyota and their recent presence within Fuji Heavy Industries and Subaru itself. They are bringing in Toyota's love for soul-less econoboxes and spreading the filth within Subaru. The cars are just getting softer and fatter, the cars are being designed more by accountants than rally drivers nowadays.

yeah I'd definitely agree with that point. It turned from a bold AWD rally king to a company that's co-developing RWD platforms with Toyota. It's disappointing. With that said, Mitsubishi has still been able to maintain its identity throughout the years, which given the choice in present day, I'd take the evo hands down. It has personality that the STi lost in 2007. I like hot hatches, but the new STi just looks like a mistake.
Yes, niche markets aren't the way to make money, but Subaru never seemed to be phased by that. I think the best STi was the one before current (05-07?). It had the boy racer mentality, but still offered packages to make it either rally ready or a gentleman's racer.

06-07 mate.
I'm going to agree 110% with Webstad, '99 was the last truly amazing year for the Impreza. The 22b was a beast, and the 555 Impreza dominated rally. If I had to get a new one, because you can't get an old STi unless imported, I would go with the 04-05 body style. It's the best looking of the last two generations, and there are no real major problems with it.

if im not mistaken didnt they do it becuase they saw that the citroen c4 was so fast and it had a hatch body and they realized that the hatch would be a lot better in terms of rallying and aero dynamic effeciency so thats why they used it. I will agree its not the best looking thing in the world but it works for them and in there first rally at athens with not testing it placed third i believe which given the competition level is fantastic.
