I'm a huge Delorean fan and I just came across this thread. I have to say the discussion on engine swaps for the Delorean isn't a new thing.
On the DMC forums, people have done, Lotus V8 swaps, 2JZ swaps, Ford SBF swaps and yes of course SBC swaps...
Putting a V8 at the back of a Delorean is a huge stretch in terms of handling. That thing is going to be tail-happy. But there are guys who have put V8s into Porsche 911s too and the result seem to be amazing.. Check Youtube... Loads of vids out there...
The best idea for me is the idea of a Porsche engine, transmission and suspension on a Delorean. The Flat 6 is balanced and perfect and has been used by Porsche for over 40+ years; so it has to be the perfect engine for a Rear engine car. But some DMC-12 owners are sceptical that this engine will fit due to the Lotus designed backbone chassis. Incidently, prior to going to Lotus, Delorean did approach Porsche to make his car production worthy. By this time the PRV was already chosen, but like Lotus made chassis changes to get it ready on time, it would have been nice to see what Porsche would have done with the concept.
Incidently, there is a guy who is currently doing a Ford V8 swap in a Delorean and he's doing an awesome job on it. I'm following the build on the DMC forums.
