Default carb problems

I am currently working on an 81 Yamaha XS 1100 special. I am having serious problems with the carbs and wondered if anyone on hear might have any ideas. The bike will idle fine on a full choke. However, introducing air by opening the throttle or taking the choke down to half or off will kill it. I replaced the carb boots between the carbs and the engine due to a vacuum leak. It now idles smooth on full choke. Before, it ran a little rough. The carbs are all equalized to #3 as that is the one that is not adjustable. It also burns through a quart of gas in about five minutes (I'm bottle feeding it due to a rusty tank). I know that the guy that previously owned it believed that cleaning the carbs was properly done by running a drill bit through the jets, so its hard to tell what else he has screwed up on them. My question... Does anyone know anything I could try before I spring for new carbs? I could put new jets in, but with what they're asking for a single jet kit, I might as well just get 4 new carbs.

The other thing I noticed is that the #1 cylinder is not running as hot as the others. It is still firing, but I believe it is not receiving as much fuel as the other 3(also chocked up to screwed up carbs). Thatnks for any help in advance.

It sounds to me like your jets are messed up from the drill bit being taken to them and are dumping fuel, that would be my guess.

The problem was that those carbs have air pre-jets that need to be clean to run correctly. As the carbs I have already had the heads of the jets stripped, I turned them upside down and filled the jet tunnels with PB Blaster for a day or two(that stuff will eat through any gunk). Then flush the whole carb with carb cleaner. If all the passages are NOT free flowing and clean, repeat the process until it is.
