4.6 liters. It is the volume of the cylinders. When the piston comes down in the cylinder it sucks in air/fuel mixture. The larger the volume of that cylinder, the more air/fuel that will be sucked in... resulting in a stronger explosion when the spark plug is lit.

That's why when you stroke a motor, it becomes larger because you are putting in a different crankshaft and increasing the compression stroke therefore increasing the displacement size of the engine. The same priciple applies to boring the cylinders out. You are increasing volume in the cylinders by doing so. You can also make small adjustments to compression and volume with different thickness of headgaskets and head chamber sizes.

Well, all 8 cylinders combined equal 5.0 liters.

Not necessarily. The 5.0 may have started out as 5 liters. correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't there a few years where ford advertised them as 5.0 when they were really 4.8? I know they're running 4.6 now, but I do remember the stink about the 5.0 controversy. Not that I'm trying to confuse you. Johnny's post is technically correct.

Yes, they were actually 4.9s, but Ford called them 5.0s, well.. because they could.

Well yeah some times they stretch the truth to get to a better sounding liter... the 5.0s were 302 cubic inches. Which is something like 4.94 liters and some consider that to be closer to a 4.9 liter.

Just wanted to make sure that I had not completely lost my mind. It's far enough gone as it is.

when all the piston are position at Bottom dead center of the cylinder. The amount of liquid/fluid fill into all the cylinder to top dead center is the total amount of liter/gallon.

so a two liters coke(soda) will fill all four cylinder in the honda 2.0 (liter) s.i went all the pistons are at bottom of the cylinder.

302 is close enough to 5.0. Alot of car companies just round it off to keep it simple.

Correct.

The reason Honda make a 4.0 V8 is to promote a smooth idle and a longer lasting engine. The more cylinder the engine has the less vibration because the firing order happen much quicker in a 4.0 v8 when compare to a v6 4.0. Honda is copying Cadillac engineer in presume to kill the ecno-box (4 cylinder). A 4.0 v8 is better than a 4.0 v6. I just hope the 4.0 v8 is not equip with a timing belt.... .

Having a 4 cylinder in a car, is sign of early death.

A 4 cylinder trying to product v8 performance. yes, it will happen, but the 4 banger will die of short death.

EXAMPLE: you can not ask/have a baby(4 banger) do the work of men(v8).

Thank you.

The Oldsmobile division produce a 4.0 v8 dual over head cam engine.
2001-2003 L47 4.0L (244in³) V8, 250 horsepower @ 5600 rpm, 260 ft·lbf torque @ 4400 rpm. City 17 MPG / Highway 25 MPG

Oldsmobile division is now dead.

I believe Toyota also have a 4.0 v8 in the Lexus make 200 hp and 225 ft lbs.
4.0L Lexus LS 400 V8 engine 200 hp at 214 lb-ft 18/25 mpg

who is the gas guzzler?

The olds use a more reliable and less maintenance timing component ,when compare to the Toyota timing belt 60-80,000 mile replacement. it takes more hp to turn a timing chain when compare to a timing belt. so how is it? the olds make more power? at the same consumption!. A timing belt is said to running quite than a timing chain. Since the timing chain is mounted in a casting with a cover. the normal running noise is muffle (insulted) buy this casting and cover. the timing belt is mounted in a plastic assemble. the noise difference is not notifiable in OEM cars if you ask me.

Yea, American make junk cars.....
