1996 mustang
i found a 96' mustang gt for sale. the guy is telling me that it has a 5.0 but i thought that they only came with 4.6. it also says that it is a GT 500. i didnt think that they made them in that year. im just trying to figure out if this guy is trying to pull one over me.

Be careful.. I'm not sure, but it's either the 1996 or 1995 Mustang GT that was really underpowered. They're all 4.6s.. the 5.0 was done with the fox body in either '93 or '94. The 4.6 2 valve is a good engine, but you have to be careful about your numbers. The block is good for 400-450rwhp... if you're looking for more, you should look for a 4 valve SVT Cobra.

well, SVO became SVT in 1993, so I don't think this guy knows too much about Mustangs. The SVO Mustang of the 80s had a turbo, but this one is a '96. It's worth asking if it's a cobra, and pictures help a lot too. If you can't figure it out from the pictures, post them here, I can tell you.

95 was the last year of the 5.0. Unless he did a swap, it's a 4.6 2v SOHC mod motor. Honestly I would stay away from 96-98 gt's. They are SLOWWWW. And they DO NOT respond to bolt ons well at all. The only way to make them decent is to swap in PI heads, intake, and cams from a 99-04 2v. But that still won't make you very fast. Actually the only way to make them fast is boost. And the block is good for around 500hp.
The SVO mustang was a turbo 4cyl that stop being produced in 86. SVO stands for Special Vehicle Operations. It became SVT (Special Vehicle Team) in 93 which was the first year the Cobra came out. It's not a GT500 either.
If it's a Cobra then snag it up quick. 4.6 4v DOHC with 300hp stock is nice. And if you end u getting a 94-95 5.0.. change the intake first. The intakes on those year 5.0's was very restrictive which is why they are so slow lol.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I specialize in mustangs

Yeah that's right on. The best ones for mods in a reasonable price range are the fox and the updated SN95 (99-04). An interesting thing to note is that even people with the luxury of choice between all the model ranges have gone with 1993 SVT Cobras. Those can be pricey, but that's saying a lot about the 5.0 setup. I'd look for that if I were you.. 99-up or 93-86.

Newer stangs can get really pricey, but you can get a pretty nice fox body for five thousand. The more you pay, the less you'll have to fix initially, but either way, you're getting an animal of a car... just make sure you get the V8

If it has about 90,000 miles, that price seems right... at least according to cars.com. For your own sake, you should find a similar Mustang to pin up against the one you're looking at now, so you'll get a better price and have something to compare the test drives to.

A 96 for 5000 shouldn't have more than 130k miles. Any more than that and I would pass. But yeah you could get a fox with alot more potential for the same price. I got my first fox for 3500. I got my current 88 5.0 with t-tops for 1900

Try searching a little bit out of state... I know for my area, the best prices are always south.
