UPDATE:
I have made several modifications to my Escort. Here is what I have done so far:
-installed Magnaflow catalytic converter
-installed K&N Air Filter
-running Castrol Syntec with K&N Performance Gold oil filter
-Bosch Platinum spark plugs (to be replaced with E-3 spark plugs)
-Duralast spark plug wires (to be replaced with aftermarket high performance wires)

I current plan is to get a job and save up to get
-blue fart can off this guy in Texas who is selling it for like $30 unless I can find one cheaper gonna saw off the stock muffler and put the fart can in with some exhaust clamps.
-install aftermarket radio/CD player and replace the blown out speakers
-fill in the rust spots with bondo and paint it
-replace stock ignition coil with aftermarket performace one

I think you're still missing the point maybe. If you want to make hp gains, you're not gonna do it by upgrading spark. As previously stated by others, you will only get back what you lost with the old stock parts being defective. That stuff really only makes a difference in high performance race cars, not your daily driver. An engine is basically a glorified air pump. the more air you can get in and out, the more power it will make. Just my thoughts on the subject. You do what you want.

I know how an engine works... <.<

After all I have done to it so far it has gained about 6 horsepower over stock which isn't much but it's something, 116 hp is better than 110 hp. I am just making the best of what I got until I can get a new car which will hopefully be a 2000 - 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Too bad my luck wasn't that good that my 97 could be a 99 with a ZETEC instead of an SPI, that way I could get a supercharger kit seeing as the engine out of the 99 is the exact same one in the 00 - 04 Focus
