Default Mustang + Eco-Friendlies = ...

With the current gas crunch hitting everyone's pockets hard, some people sometimes want to feel as if they are doing something to help turn things around. Given the current low-performance options of the Prius, Civic hybrid, Camry hybrid, Lexus hybrids and varioius SUV hybrids as the front runners, with electric cars such as the Tesla lagging behind due to setbacks and other electric cars just sucking horribly, someone decided to step in. Enter in the HST Shelby Cobra EVX and Tjaard TVX Mustang. Someone thought it'd be cool to take these two iconic sports cars, pull out the powerplants and replace them with electric motors. The scoop can be found Here through the Motor Authority. Thoughts? Comments? Shall we call blasphemy or the second coming? Performance figures are pretty decent, even better than the gasoline equivalents in some cases, but deplorable in others.

The idea is cool, but it's not the pure expression of motor-sport we all know and love. Quite honestly, there is legislation that wants to cut federal tax on gas from may-september, which will save you 18.4 cents a gallon (if you're wondering, that's McCain's idea). I think that's a great idea given that it can boost the economy by giving people extra travel money etc. Plus, electric motors really have a limited lifetime, and to replace them costs 1/3 the price of the car... not to mention that the premium price you pay for a hybrid, only equals the gasoline equivalent if you drive the hybrid for 150,000 miles at $4 a gallon.

Haha that is kind of awesome! Especially since the cars still do pretty well performance wise. Wonder how much they're selling for though? All these "green" cars are always more expensive than their gasoline counterparts.

I think many people forget that electricity isn't free (unless you own huge solar panels, or windmills).

My question is will your electric bill go up as much as you would have spent on gas?

If we migrate to electric cars, power plants will need to increase electric production. Will those power plants produce less harmful emissions than that of the gas powered cars they are replacing?

This is always a good question. At the moment the number of electric cars is small enough that the draw on electricity is hardly anything to notice. Electricity is one of the cheapest forms of energy right now. It only costs cents to a Kw.

I very much doubt that electric cars are going to take off and become a mass market item. There is way too much cost associated with them, and unless those costs can be cut dramatically, they just aren't worth the effort. Right now they're just a novelty item.

You have to look at the fact that most of the Hybrids run a system similar to the trains. You need to have some sort of generator to produce the elcetricity. The systems usually run a voltage range of 300V on up to 2000v. Not something I would want to accidentally tie into!!

The idea of the Hybrids are nice, at this time though they are not cost effective. The price you pay compared to a regular car, the difference can buy you a LOT of gas and get you MUCH further. They need to come up with something that doesn't use sources that we have to produce!!!
