Okay, here's one for you. A few weeks ago I was going back a dirt lane to a cabin for my job when I spotted a late fifties chevy fleetside p/u sitting in the woods. The chrome trim and badges were in descent shape and the rest didn't look to bad for despite the fact that it had obviously been sitting there for the last 15 years at least. I am not currently in the market for a chevy p/u, but my best friend is. So, I said something to him about it. He asked me to get some pics the next time I was out that way. Today was that day. I stopped at the closest house to ask who the owner might be and was told to see the man in the shed. I went and introduced myself and inquired as to the truck. He replied "You can have it if you want it". I wasn't sure that's what he said so I continued to talk to the guy for a little bit to get a bit of info on the truck and told him my friend might be interested. I then asked how much he might want for it. He said "Nothing. If you guys come pull it out of the woods, you can have it. I ain't gonna do anything with it" So I asked him if he minded me going back to take some pics to show to my buddy. He said "Sure". I went back and took some pics and looked the truck over a little and discovered that it's a little rougher than I originally thought. But the bed, which is the hard part to find for that year is in descent shape, save the wood floor. I walked back out and the guy was standing by one of his sheds and I mentioned that I would like to exchange info with him but needed to a pen and paper from the car. He waved me over and said "Hang on a sec, I want you to see something, You're gonna like this". With that I followed him to the door of the shed he was standing by. He opened the door and I was face to face with a massive chrome grille, 2 bucket head lamps, rolling fenders and a Dodge Bros. Motor Company emblem from the early 30's. The only thing that came to mind, and consequently, out my mouth, was HOLY SH!T! I then said "Excuse my language, sir. It's not every day I get to have an antique dodge unveiled in front of me. He chuckled and said " Yep, that's a '31 Dodge with the straight 8 and it runs. Everything works just fine". I did not ask if it was original, but it looked to me that it was, or maybe lightly restored long ago. I did ask if he would ever consider selling it, to which he shrugged and replied "Maybe, I just kinda like having it around to look at for now".
Thats far more than you'll get out of most owners. I'm used to hearing the same old "Nope, I'm not interested", "It's not for sale" or "No, I'm going to fix it someday". This guy offered me a free pickup and a maybe on a '31 Dodge 4-door sedan with a straight 8 that looks to be original. And I'm not tellin' where the location of these vehicles are. Sorry, boys.
