Default GM Chrysler merger talks

Apparently GM and Cerberus have been have been talking about a possible merger.

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - General Motors is in preliminary talks about a possible merger with fellow U.S. automaker Chrysler, The New York Times reported late on Friday.

The talks between GM and Cerberus Capital Management, the private equity firm that owns Chrysler, began more than a month ago and are not certain to produce a deal, the paper said.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday night that the merger talks had been suspended because of financial market turmoil.

The Times said two people close to the process said the chances of a merger were "50-50" as of Friday and would most likely still take weeks to work out.

A merger would drastically reshape the ailing U.S. auto industry, reducing the Big Three of Detroit to the Big Two.

GM shares have fallen to near a 60-year low on fears the global financial crisis could derail turnaround plans.

GM and Detroit's other automaker, Ford Motor Co both ruled out on Friday seeking bankruptcy protection.

GM shares fell as low as $4 early on Friday, the lowest price for the stock since 1949, but recovered and ended up 13 cents, or 2.7 percent higher, at $4.89 on the New York Stock Exchange.
I'm sure that this is just one of those hypothetical kind of talks that will likely never happen, but it is interesting nonetheless.

I can't think of anything either would gain from such a merger.

That would be interesting though. Definitely interesting.....I would feel kind of bad though. The US has three major auto makers...it would be sad to see it go down to two. Hard enough to compete in the world markets!

It'd be more beneficial for Chrysler than it is for GM I would say. Most of the modern GM domestic vehicles take cues, parts, and even entire models from their European marks so the quality in their products, especially the interiors, have really gone up in the past few years. Chrysler on the other hand every one of their vehicles feels extremely cheap whenever I sit in them, and frankly they can all use an exterior make over. The best benefit for GM I think would be acquiring Jeep since a lot of GM's SUV's are rather blah, that might actually be the only benefit for GM come to think of it. Maybe we'll finally see the ME Four-Twelve come to life, a quad turbo V12 might actually get better gas mileage than the Hummer.

GM, Ford May Face Bankruptcy on Slowdown

Jeff Green and Marco Bertacche
Bloomberg
October 10, 2008

General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC may be forced into bankruptcy by slowing economies and dwindling U.S. auto sales, Standard & Poor’s analyst Robert Schulz said today.

“Macro factors could overwhelm them at some point” even with the three biggest U.S. automakers committed to turnarounds, Schulz said in a Bloomberg Television interview. S&P said yesterday it may cut GM and Ford debt deeper into junk on forecasts for 2009 auto demand falling to the lowest since 1992.

GM, Ford and Chrysler are under pressure as the worsening global credit crisis makes it harder for buyers to get loans and dealers to finance their operations. U.S. industrywide sales tumbled 27 percent in September, the most in 17 years.

GM fell 17 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $4.59 at 9:52 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, while Ford added 7 cents to $2.15. GM slumped to a 58-year low yesterday and Ford closed at its lowest since 1982. Chrysler is closely held.

With all three companies working to boost cash, any bankruptcy filing would be a last resort, not a “strategic” decision, said Schulz, who is based in New York.

This was an intelligent comment until the last sentence.

The problem isn't what anyone is or isn't buying, or GM and Ford's product lines. The problem is Unions.. plain and simple. Foreign automakers don't have them, and they make money... domestic automakers do have them, and they lose money.

I think that GM will get rid of Pontiac or Buick like they did with Oldsmobile.
They won't get rid of GMC trucks because that branch allows them to market in areas that they aren't able to put the entire Chevy line-up into.
Chrysler would do well to dump the Dodge brand and turn the Dodge cars into Chrysler, or visa-versa.

The best advantage for GM I believe would be obtaining Jeep since many of GM's SUV's are rather blah, that might really be the only advantage for GM arrive to believe of it.
