The fact of the matter is he designed some of the most well known cars to ever hit the roads, and sure the DMC12 had its (many) flaws, people still know it when they see it, and at least some of them know that it is a Delorean. I'd still buy one, I'd swap out the engine and transaxle, update the brakes and the interior some, but I'd still buy one.
