WOW! some interesting post in here and some good points!
Let me give you my position on a few of the items. This is coming from somebody that works in the new car industry and deals with US made vehicles and foreign made vehicles.
1. The "buy only american" idea will NEVER happen. We are a society that wants it all and wants the best at the cheapest price and the foreign car market offers this. If you are a "buy only american" believer then you need to get rid of any and all cell phones you have or use along with the X-box and the Playstation. You will also need to quit posting on the internet, half if not more of your computer system is built with foreign parts. If you have any aftermarket stereo in your car you need to remove it, it is not US made. We want to talk buy american buy american however when it comes down to it we can not and will not buy american because we are not willing to give up the easy way of life, why would a auto be any different.
2. YES, foreign cars ARE better quality, longer lasting, better designed, and have a higher resale value than US made cars. I have been in the auto manufacture quality business for years and I can tell you without any dought the foreign cars ARE better made cars. If you would like sprecific examples I would be more than happy to provide many.
3. The US made cars have improved and is closing the gap between them and the foreign market. This is NOT do to the big 3 wanting to better the cars for their customers, this is because they were forced to do so to be competative with the superior foreign cars. If the foreign car market did not come to the table we would still be driving the crap that was being produced by the big 3 in the late 70's and early 80's
4. The funny part of this debate is that the US cars that everybody is saying are just as good or not better than the foreign cars ARE foreign cars. The platforms that we love today (CTS, G8, GTO, Cobalt, etc) are all cars that are built on Australian or other over seas ventures by GM and just rebumpered and rebadged to pass it as a US made car. Thesee are GM owned companies however they are NOt in the US.
At the end of the day the foreign cars are better and the sales prove it. The modern consumer will buy the best car their budget can afford and with the research that can be made via the internet the majority is buying foreign. If the US cars were in fact better and a better value (including trade value) they would sell more vehicles.
I am sure that the majority of people on here have watched Top Gear and watch Jeremy bash US made cars. Though it seems he hates us americans, please pay attention to what he has to say, there is a lot of truth in the flaws he points out in the US made cars. Chrysler even refused to give them a new Challenger to test because they were concerned it would not fare so well.
I have never owned a foreign car however I have drove about every make and almost every model out there and I also deal with them and their parts daily in my job.
